How to Take Care of a Teething Baby

Doesn’t it break your heart when you see your little tot cry in agony because of swollen gums or be fussy and irritable because of pain? Blame it on the phenomenon called teething that babies as young as six months start to experience.

Good thing, there are ways to alleviate your baby’s suffering. The first and foremost step toward comforting your tyke is to know the symptoms of teething. When teething begins, you may notice your child making a habit of pulling his ears as the pain on his gums usually reverberate to his ears. He may also attempt to chew on anything he gets his hands on or refuse to feed from breast or bottle since sucking makes the pain of swollen gums even worse. Other indications include heavy drooling, swollen gums, nasal discharge and irritability.

To lighten the pain in his swollen gums, a good idea is to rub baby’s gums with your clean finger slightly moistened with cold water or with a spoon chilled from the refrigerator. Another reliable teething remedy is to offer refrigerated rubber, gel-filled or plastic teething rings or toys. Toy brands such as Baby Einstein offer a variety of teething toys you can use to give relief to his gums.

You can offer your baby to gnaw on a Baby Einstein Caterpillar Cooling Teether that will serve as a counterpressure against the gums. This teether can be chilled in the refrigerator for the cold surface help soothe baby's gums.

When baby gets fussy and irritable because of the pain from his swollen gums that he can barely stand, it’s always useful to have a toy around to distract him, entertain him and make him forget about his woe and misery even just for a while. The Baby Einstein On-the-Go Link Set is not only a teether but also an amusing toy that you can attach to strollers, cribs or infant carriers. Baby’s hand-eye coordination skills are enhanced while giving relief from his teething distress.

Teethers are not the only toys you can use to decrease the pain of teething. Distraction is an important key. You can engage your baby to play with other Baby Einstein toys like puppets, stuffed animals or baby toys, or be soothed by lullabies from Baby Einstein CD.

You can also place him in his Baby Einstein Discovering Water Rocker Seat which has plush and soft plastic developmental toys that keep baby busy while its constant rocking motion can also soothe him to a calm rest.

Another well-known remedy you can use is to offer bread or chilled food and drinks. You can try frozen carrot sticks, bananas or apple slices. If previous measures still don’t work maybe the solution is pain relief medication. However, make sure you consult your paediatrician first before giving your baby any medicine.

Teething is not only a hard time for the baby but for parents as well. Be sure to get plenty of rest and sleep. Nap when your baby takes one and don’t forget to nourish yourself with a proper nutritional diet. Remember, you also need to be in top shape to be able to take good care of your teething baby.
