4 Super Tips to Teach Your Toddler about Shapes

Which shape has the most number of sides? A square? An octagon? An icosagon? Actually, a circle is technically a polygon with an infinite number of sides. Throughout the day we see round donuts, rectangular doors, and eight-sided stop signs. But rarely do we think about how important shapes (or geometry for that matter) are in our day-to-day lives in Holmes Country Ohio or another location. Shapes are among the list of vital concepts that toddlers should learn. Activities such as watching the Baby Newton Discovering Shapes DVD, can help your child to learn about shapes in an educational yet fun way.

As we remember from elementary school in Berlin Ohio or elsewhere, Isaac Newton’s (who the Baby Newton Discovering DVD is named after) major contribution to society was his explanation about gravity. And you have probably have heard the story that Newton discovered the laws of gravity after an apple fell from a tree and landed on his noggin. Actually, there is no solid proof that the apple incident happened. But regardless, Newton’s discoveries have advanced our understanding of the physical universe, for those of us living in places such as Berlin Ohio. Here are some interesting facts about Newton:

• Newton was born during the same year that Galileo, the famous astronomer, died.
• Newton never married.
• Newton held a post that modern scientist Stephen Hawking currently has: Cambridge’s Lucasian Chair of Mathematics.
• Edmond Halley (known as the discoverer of Halley’s Comet) was a close friend of Newton.
• Newton was born on Christmas Day
• Along with Albert Einstein, he is often ranked 1 or 2 in lists of history’s top physicists

Whether you live in Berlin Ohio or elsewhere, you want to help guide your toddler in his or her development. Several activities can make learning shapes a barrel of fun:

Poster child
Posters can also be used as a guide for teaching children about shapes. These posters are inexpensive, but can provide priceless lessons to your little one.

Shape-hunting season
Regardless of whether or not you live in Berlin Ohio, this activity is perfect for teaching your tot about shapes. Let your kid pick one shape from a bag of different shapes. Then have your child find as many objects in the home, which have that particular shape. Count the objects as he or she finds them.

Being a blockhead
Toy blocks are excellent for teaching shapes to preschoolers in Berlin Ohio and other locations. The blocks are made in various shapes, so the child can sort them into piles of squares, circles, triangles, etc. Talk with your child about the different shapes of the blocks. As a variation to this activity, you can also review counting and colors with your baby.

An edible education
This activity is as tasty as it is educational, and can be done anywhere, including Berlin Ohio. Spread out homemade or pre-packaged dough on a greased cookie sheet. Then use cookie cutters to cut out different shapes of cookies. Just use two shapes for toddlers. If your older children want to join in on the fun, add additional shapes.

After the cookies have finished baking and have cooled, have your little on sort the cookies, according to shape. You can also talk about the different shape names, and count them as well. While the family dentist might not recommend this activity, the “teachable moment” that it provides is worth the need to break out the toothbrush.

While shapes are simple, they are important as your toddler explores his or her world in Millesburg Ohio or another place. Activities such as watching Baby Newton Discovering Shapes DVD are perfect for helping your child’s learning to shape up!
